Earlier this winter, Burton, Nike, Special Blend, and Oakley were chosen to compete in Transworld’s 2012 Team Shoot Out. The four outerwear brands chose a location to shoot and photograph their talented team for 10 consecutive days in April. Each team consisted of 5 riders, including at least one woman. Without a woman, the brand can only have 4 riders. The teams were allowed one photographer and three videographers to create eight photos and a two to five minute video.
The creative works will be revealed tomorrow July 16 on Transworld, but I had the opportunity to attend the open house screening and photography show held at their headquarters. Transworld welcomed guest to their private skate park with yummy tacos and kegs of beer and spirits. The event started with the screening of the four videos.

Spoiler alert, here’s Team Shoot Out 2012 videos in a nut shell:
Special Blend was up first. How can you go wrong with fireworks, pranks, blowing up stuff, and colored smoke? The team attached smoke cans at the tail their board, so as they aired off huge jumps and hips, they left a colorful trail of smoke. My favorite shot of smoke was an 180 onto an elevated pond skim with a switch back 180 off.
The Burton [ak] team consited of Jussi Oksanen, Terje Haakonsen, Jeremy Jones, Stephan Maurer and Kimmy Fasani who was one of only two women who participated in the event. With an emphasis on backcountry riding, Burton [ak] edit had a dreamy, nostalgic, yet badass vibe filled with beautiful pow slashes, silhouetted snowmobiling, huge jumps and one of my favorite shots: a cover-worthy-grainy-slow-mo-black-and-white close up of Kimmy Fasani’s handplant on a tree.
Nike decided to take the techiest tricks in snowboarding and do them on the most massive features they can find. They shot their video in their exclusive Park at Silveretta Montafon and along the streets of Austria. Reflections was the reoccurring motif. Their secret: shooting through plexiglass and into puddles gave them some cool action shots they couldn’t recreate in Final Cut. Huge back 3 over a snow plow on a road gap and a double rodeo over lift lines are just some of the epic shots you might see. It’s ridic.
Oakley’s take on edit was definitely different. It was a mix between Zoolander + an 80s electro music video with cheesy effects + snowboarding. Who doesn’t want to see Marie France Roy lip sing and dance in a long red wig? Oh, and did I mention how awesome Halldor Helgason’s kick flip off a building was?

After the video screening, Nick Hamilton, TransWorld’s Senior Photo Editor, revealed not one, but FOUR different covers for the August issue of TransWorld Snowboarding. All teams were winners this year!

Photo frendzies: TWS Senior Photo Editor Nick Hamilton, man behind the lens, Burton photographer Adam Moran, and I spy photographer Andy Wright
The reception continued with a photo gallery displaying 8 photos from each team and free magazines featuring the four new covers.

Burton video guru, Tim Manning made the video along with Corey Koniniec and Aaron Leyland.

Among all the talented men, Kimmy Fasani took it home for the team with a cover for the Burton [ak] team. Thank you, Kimmy for being the first woman to be featured on the cover of TWS in 5 years, and the fifth female to be on the cover ever.
For the very first time in Team Shoot Out history, instead of TransWorld editors choosing the submission winners, TransWorld is letting YOU determine who will be the champions. YOU choose: Best cover, best 8 photos, and best video. Do it all right here at Transworld Snowboarding.
